Using the award winning device in the manholeRWRD received AZ Water’s Gimmick and Gadgets Award! This award highlights the significant effort, communication, and collaboration of RWRD’s Conveyance Division and Safety Office. The award also included B & F Contracting, a B & F subcontractor, and Precision Tool and Construction Supply for the creation of the Safety Guard. The Conveyance Division took a sudden compliance disparity and turned it into a device that provides enhanced safety for conveyance crews, convenience for use and storage, and compliance with applicable standards.

RWRD found that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration had modified the standards for fall prevention when operating around an open manhole. It removed the option of using an appointed monitor to guard and secure the manhole and prevent anyone from falling into the manhole. This immediately created a challenge for anyone who works around an open manhole, but is not making a permit-required confined space entry.

After testing the design and prototype to ensure it could support more than twice its intended load and weight specifications, a Job Order Contractor took it to development. There are 40 Safety Guards now in use in the Conveyance Division. The Job Hazard Analysis and department’s fall protection plan now includes the Safety Guard. Congratulations and thank you for making RWRD and our community a safer place!
