  • Supervisors honor County Attorney LaWall’s 44-year career

“Barbara LaWall Children’s Advocacy Center” is now the official name of the county-owned building that houses the Children’s Advocacy Center of Southern Arizona. The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted on Oct. 20 to bestow this special tribute upon County Attorney Barbara LaWall in recognition of the quarter century of dedication she has demonstrated to children in our community who have been victims of crimes of abuse.

The Children’s Advocacy Center is a child-sensitive and child-centered environment where more than 1,000 victims of extreme abuse and neglect each year are examined and interviewed for evidence collection. The Center also offers services for parents and guardians.

LaWall’s vision and leadership made the Center a reality. She coordinated representatives from agencies across the County to establish the Center in 1996 and construct a stand-alone building in 2008. The building is bright and colorful, has child-sized equipment and furniture, and even includes a full-time facility dog that offers children comfort during difficult moments in the criminal justice process.

With a unanimous vote, the Pima County Board of Supervisors adopted the Proclamation virtually presented to LaWall by Chairman Ramón Valadez. Deputy County Attorney Tracy Miller, who is the Chief of the Special Victims Bureau, and Chief Civil Deputy County Attorney Andrew Flagg accepted the Proclamation on LaWall’s behalf and testified that this honor could not be more appropriate for their leader, mentor, and fellow advocate.
