The Pima County Department of Transportation (PCDOT), in conjunction with the Regional Transportation Authority's (RTA) Roadway Improvement Plan, is working to improve the Valencia Road Corridor from Mark Road to Ajo Highway (S.R. 86). Valencia Road is a major east west arterial on the south side of the Tucson metropolitan area and designated as a Scenic Major Route in the Pima County Major Streets and Routes Plan. This portion of Valencia Road is located within the Pima County Board of Supervisors District 3.
The RTA's Roadway Improvement Plan, which was approved by Pima County voters in May 2006, proposed that this existing two-lane arterial be designed as a "desert parkway" and provide multi-modal transportation improvements.
These efforts will improve safety, reduce congestion, improve operations and increase mobility for current and future traffic needs.
Proposed Improvements consist of the following:
- Widening the roadway from two to four lanes.
- Installation of a raised center median.
- Providing bike lanes and sidewalks.
- Intersection work at Camino Verde, Wade Road, Valhalla Road and Ajo Highway (S.R. 86) to match or improve existing conditions.
|
- Drainage improvements throughout the corridor.
- Landscaping throughout the corridor.
- Public Art along the project corridor.
|
The corridor has been divided into three phases. The first phase to be designed and constructed will be from Mark Road to Wade Road. The estimated start of construction on Phase 1of the project is Late Fall of 2014. The second phase will be from Wade Road to Mountain Eagle. The final phase will be from Mountain Eagle to Ajo Highway (S.R.86).
