  • Procurement discovers some change really is a good thing

Life has been looking very different lately, but staff in the Procurement Department think change is actually a good thing. And so do their friends at the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

This fall, Procurement held a “Change” drive to benefit the Food Bank as part of its Ben’s Bells Kind Colleagues Program. The department split up into three teams according to department division: Admin Services, Materials & Services, and Design & Construction. Nichole Caballero served as the Change Drive moderator and chief counter of the collected money.

The rules were each division had their own jug for collecting money. Each division gained points by adding pennies and bills to their division’s jug. Adding silver coins to other divisions’ jugs lowered their totals.

The fun and competitive challenge raised $706.96 for the Food Bank, with the Admin Services Division leading the way. For each $2 donated, seven meals can be provided to children, seniors and families in need.

“This means that our donation will provide 2,474 meals to help solve hunger in our community,” said Terri Spencer, division manager of the Design and Construction Division.

“In the midst of change, it’s easy for our fear response to overwhelm us with stress hormones,” Spencer said. “The Procurement Department decided to cast a positive light on change by participating and working together to help the Food Bank as they struggle with increased need as a result of the pandemic.”

Procurement Director Mary Jo Furphy was pleased with her staff’s enthusiastic response.

“By shifting the focus from ourselves to the needs of others, it encouraged a new perspective and allowed us to see ourselves as members of a larger community,” Furphy said. “We’re very proud that our Kind Colleagues Program helped prompt this act of kindness.”
