miceTwas’ a few weeks before Christmas and all through Pima Animal Care Center, not a creature was stirring, not even the roughly 140 mice who recently arrived at the shelter.

“These mice arrived a few weeks ago as part of an Animal Protection Services Investigation,” said Monica Dangler, Interim Director of Animal Services. “Because that investigation is ongoing, we cannot get into details about the case.”

The mice vary in age from newborn to adult. The mice will be available to adopt on Friday, December 18, from 8 a.m. to noon. Potential adopters can sign up here. People looking to adopt the mice must bring their own carrier to take them home. There is a limit of two family members per appointment.

“While the kids are still taking lessons at home, now is the perfect time to bring home a ‘classroom pet,’” Dangler said.

The shelter is also holding a “Name Your Own Price” sale through January 7, 2020. Potential adopters of other pets can make an appointment to meet pets at the shelter at

First, people should fill out the appropriate survey. Then, once they receive the shelter’s response email, the potential adopter can choose a day and time to come in to meet a specific pet or walk through the kennels. All visitors must wear a mask that covers their mouth and nose while at the shelter.

Something to note, the shelter will have special hours for the upcoming holidays:
    Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020: Noon to 5:00 p.m.
Christmas Day, December 25, 2020: CLOSED
    New Year's Eve, December 31, 2020: Noon to 5:00 p.m.
    New Year's Day, January 1, 2021: CLOSED

The shelter is open for essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic. All non-emergency appointments will require an appointment. People can make their appointments and keep up with the operational changes at
