A water slide, splash pad, and inflatable obstacle course are just a few of the kid-friendly activities that will be featured at a Water Safety Expo this Saturday, August 21.
Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation (NRPR) is one of several co-sponsors of the event, which will take place at
Manzanita Pool, at 5110 S. San Joaquin Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event is free.
Life jackets will be handed out while supplies last, according to NRPR Program Coordinator Jodi Layton. If you have an old life jacket, you can also swap it out for a brand-new one, courtesy of the
Arizona Game and Fish Department.
Drexel Heights Fire District and Northwest Fire District will be on hand with fire trucks and water safety information for families. Other sponsors of the event include the
Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona, the
American Red Cross, and
Safe Kids Pima County.
The event is part of Drowning Impact Awareness Month. Layton said that August remains a high-risk month for child drownings in Arizona, due to the distractions of returning to school.
Children aged one to four are at the highest risk of drowning deaths, according to the
Arizona Department of Health Services.
