World Car Free Day is this Wednesday, September 22, and the Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ) Clean Air Program will celebrate with two mini-fairs for commuters who use alternate modes of transportation. In the morning, snacks and beverages will be offered to commuters who walk, bike, skate or scooter at Rillito Park, along The Loop east of First Avenue, 6:30 a.m. – 9 a.m.  At lunch time, more snacks will be offered at Jacomé Plaza in front of the Joel D. Valdez Main Library at Stone and Pennington, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. PDEQ will also be providing information about air quality and ways to make using alternate modes of transportation easier.

If you use an alternate mode during the month of September, you have the chance to win prizes during Car Free Month. Any resident of Pima County may submit a selfie of the way they get to work, but not if they drive alone. For the contest, car free modes of travel include: bike, bus, streetcar, walk, skate, scooter, carpool, vanpool, telework, and compressed work schedule. For a chance at prizes, take a photo of yourself using an alternate mode. Another way to win prizes is to take the Drive Less pledge. You can submit your selfie and take the pledge using the links found at www.pima.gov/HealthyAir.

Your choice of prizes (while supplies last):
    • Hydro Flask Water Bottle
    • Loop Jersey
    • Loop T-shirt and ball cap
    • Bike Pannier
    • Insulated Backpack Cooler
Pima County first participated in World Car Free Day in 2010. Recognizing that cleaner air is a long-term goal, not just a one-day goal, PDEQ expanded the event this year to last all of September.
