Grease Collection and Recycling Event
Can you believe it? We are about to embark upon our 17th Annual Grease Collection and Recycling event!
You know what that means…start saving your holiday FOG (fats, oils, and grease) NOW because on Jan. 8, 2022, the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) will collect all that grease at seven designated collection sites across Pima County.
RWRD, in partnership with Grecycle, Jacobs Engineering, Pima Community College, O’Rielly Chevrolet, and the Town of Sahuarita will give the collected grease to our partner, Grecycle, where it will be recycled into biodiesel, a cleaner-burning fuel that can reduce our dependence on crude oil and help reduce greenhouse gases for a healthier Pima Country.
When fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from cooking and baking are poured down a drain, they can damage the pipes and cause sewer backups into homes, businesses, city streets, and other public areas. The worst-case scenario is that accumulated FOG could result in sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), which occur when sewage is discharged into the environment prior to reaching sewage treatment facilities.

This annual event assists our utility in keeping the sanitary sewer system and water reclamation facilities running efficiently. Thanks to the residents of Pima County, we have collected nearly 75,000 pounds of grease since the event was introduced in November 2005.
If you would like to volunteer to help out at one of the event sites, contact Permit Regulatory Compliance Officer Jason Grodman who is coordinating the event for RWRD this year. He can be reached at Jason.grodman@pima.gov, or for more information, please visit www.pima.gov/grease.
