  • Follow a food safety playbook on Super Bowl Sunday

    COVID-19 protocols aren’t the only thing to consider if you’re planning to gather with friends to watch the big game. Follow this food safety playbook to help you keep your Super Bowl food both safe and delicious!


    Agree to a Clean Game

    • Before you eat or handle food, wash your hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds.
    • Wash your cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and countertops with hot, soapy water after preparing each food item. 
    • Wash or scrub fruits and vegetables under running water – even if you do not plan to eat the peel – so dirt and germs on the surface do not get inside when you cut.
    Keep Opposing Teams Apart
    • Separate raw meats from ready-to-eat foods like veggies when preparing, serving, or storing foods.
    • Use separate cutting boards, plates, and knives for produce and for raw meat, chicken, turkey, seafood and eggs.
    Cook the Opponent
    • Cooking food to the right temperature kills harmful germs. 
    • Use a food thermometer to check meat, egg, and microwaved dishes on your menu.
    • Make sure chicken wings (and other poultry) reach an internal temperature of at least 165°F. Ground beef and egg dishes should reach at least 155°F. 
    • Check the safe internal temperature for other foods.
    Chill Out
    • Most germs grow fast at temperatures between 41°F and 135°F, also known as the Danger Zone. 
    • Don’t leave food sitting out at room temperature for more than two hours. Before those two hours are up, place small portions of leftovers in shallow containers and refrigerate them promptly. 
    • When reheating leftovers, make sure they reach 165°F.
