  • RWRD Receives Award for Twin Peaks/Blue Bonnet Project

    By Jaime Rivera

The Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) recently received the Build Arizona award for the Twin Peaks/Blue Bonnet Gravity Sewer Project, along with its partners Achen-Gardner Construction and Engineering and Environmental Consultants (EEC).

The Build Arizona award is given by the Arizona Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America. It was presented to RWRD Deputy Director Jaime Rivera, EEC Project Manager Carrie Cote and Achen-Gardner Project Manager Geoff Tucker.

This multi-phase project was to install a gravity sewer line near the Twin Peaks Road/Blue Bonnet Road alignment, so that future developments can be connected to the line. The line extends north to the RWRD Tangerine Road Pump Station.

Significant coordination with RWRD, private developers and stakeholders was required, and the project followed a strict schedule in order to facilitate the construction of planned developments.

This project was divided into three segments:

    • Segment 1 extended from the Tangerine Road Pump Station south to the intersection of Blue Bonnet and Twin Peaks Road. Quantities included 23 manholes (5-foot diameter) and 10,000 LF of 15” sewer, 200 LF of which will be jacked and bored under Twin Peaks Road.
    • Segment 2 extended from the Blue Bonnet and Twin Peaks Road intersection to approximately 200 feet south of the Linda Vista and Hartman Lane intersection. Quantities included 7,181 LF of 15” sewer, 12 manholes (5-foot diameter), and one polymer junction manhole.
    • Segment 3 extended from the end of Segment 2 to just south of the Cortaro Farms and Hartman Lane intersection. Quantities included 8,000 LF of 15” sewer and 22 manholes (5-foot diameter).

As part of this project, we also completed the installation of RWRD’s first ever SaniTite sewer line. RWRD is testing the material for use in sewer line installation projects.

The Twin Peaks/Blue Bonnet Gravity Sewer Project also won the Metropolitan Pima Alliance’s Common Ground Award in 2019 and the Arizona Chapter of the American Public Works Association’s Public Works Project of the Year award in 2021.
