Eight-year-old Rene Haywood received a new bicycle and helmet on April 23, thanks to the community rallying behind him after he was struck in a hit-and-run accident earlier this month.none

Ajo Bikes graciously sponsored a new bike for Rene, who suffered a broken arm in the April 3 crash at Curtis and Shannon Roads, and the Pima County Sheriff’s Auxiliary Volunteers purchased three bicycles for Rene’s siblings.

The Sporting Chance Center let the children try their new bicycles out safely indoors.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Auxiliary Volunteers, Chief Deputy Chris Nanos and the Pima County Department of Transportation presented the gift.

The driver of the vehicle, a white two-door sedan, remains unidentified.
