    Independence Day Fireworks
Jun 30, 2015 - On Independence Day declare freedom from stinky charcoal lighter fluid that causes air pollution, is a safety hazard when stored around your home and can leave a residual taste on your food. If charcoal is your choice of fuel, try barbecuing without lighter fluid. It will help make our air healthier to breathe. Mixed with sunshine and other pollutants, the chemicals in lighter fluid create a pollutant called ground-level ozone. By being lighter-fluid free at your next barbecue, you can save money and improve the environment.

Take the "Healthy Air Is In Our Hands" Drive-Less pledge and skip a commute trip in your motor vehicle each week by carpooling, taking transit or riding a bike instead. By skipping one commute trip a week, you can reduce air pollution about 1,100 pounds a year and help keep the air healthy for those you care about.

    Human Respiratory System
May 18, 2015 - Hot and stagnant summer air provides the perfect conditions for the creation of an air pollutant called ground-level ozone. Miles above us in the naturally occurring layer, ozone acts as a protective shield against damaging solar radiation. But at ground level, ozone irritates respiratory system tissue and can damage the lining of the lungs, causing a reaction similar to sunburn. Ozone aggravates asthma, emphysema and other respiratory diseases.

Apr 15, 2015 - The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality is issuing an air quality advisory today due to the windy conditions and the potential for elevated levels of particulate matter.

    Sky with Sun Rays
Feb 13, 2015 - According to the American Lung Association, the number of cases of pediatric and adult asthma, COPD, and cardiovascular disease in Pima County amounts to over 200,000. Chances are you know someone who has one of these ailments. New Year's Fireworks
Dec 30, 2014 - As the crystal ball drops in Times Square, so could the quality of our air in Pima County. For several years, air quality analysts at Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ) have noticed that levels of small particulates increase on New Year’s Eve.
Inversion and Pollution Cause Hazy Winter Air
Dec 03, 2014 - Why does the morning sky look hazy? Meteorologists call this phenomenon a temperature inversion. It’s what happens when nighttime and early morning temperatures drop, trapping pollutants in the calm morning air. Warm air above the cool surface air traps the polluted air close to the ground, and keeps it from rising.
Checking Tire Pressure Saves Money and the Air
Nov 21, 2014 - Would you like to save money on gasoline and extend the life of your tires? Pima County Department of Environmental Quality's Clean Air Program recommends checking your tire pressure when there is a big drop in outside temperatures. Our science teachers taught us that air expands when heated and contracts when chilled, which means there is a lot less air pressure in your tires when the temperatures drop during the fall and winter seasons.
    Rakes Produce No Air Pollution
Nov 19, 2014 - If cleaning up around the house for holiday guests involves removing fallen leaves on the porch or pathways in the yard, consider picking up a broom or rake instead of a gas-powered leaf blower. The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality’s Clean Air Program provides information about how our daily choices affect the air we breathe.
    Fireplace
Nov 18, 2014 - Chilly temperatures are here and some people will be turning to wood burning to add warmth to their homes. According to the EPA, there are approximately 29 million wood-burning fireplaces or stoves in the United States. These and other wood-burning appliances (such as chimineas) contribute to wintertime particle pollution and the brown haze we sometimes see in eastern Pima County. By choosing not to use wood-burning appliances, if you have other heating options, or by burning smarter, we can help keep the air healthier to breathe.
    Halloween Pumpkins
Oct 31, 2014 - Dark nights, stop-and-go vehicles, zombies and skeletons chasing after treats across the streets could frighten any driver. Driving around in neighborhoods on Halloween can be scary, but not as scary as the polluted air that idling vehicles cause. Don’t let your car idle while your children trick or treat -- park and walk instead.
    Bike Wheel
Oct 09, 2014 - Pima County Clean Air Program is supporting a new service to encourage bicycling instead of driving to local community events. Living Streets Alliance (LSA) is launching their Bike Valet Event Parking Program this weekend at the Tucson Meet Yourself Festival. The program will continue throughout the year at popular community events to provide convenient and secure bike parking for those who want to skip that vehicle trip and reap all the benefits of bicycling.
    Children Walking to School
Oct 07, 2014 - Schools in the Tucson metropolitan area are joining people all over the world in celebration of International Walk and Bike to School Day. Join the fun for a great way to combine kid time with a little exercise and enjoyment of our delightful autumn weather. Children Walking to School
Sep 02, 2014 - The Pima County Department of Transportation and Department of Environmental Quality are working together to encourage children, parents and guardians to take part in International Walk and Bike to School Day on Wednesday, October 8th or 15th, 2014, depending on school schedule. Walking, bicycling, and using other active modes of transportation improves health through physical activity, helps reduce obesity, reduces traffic congestion, and provides family members with an opportunity to spend quality time with each other and to connect with neighbors.

Aug 11, 2014 - Looking for a place to properly dispose of your household hazardous waste? Improper disposal of such wastes can include pouring them down the drain, on the ground or into storm drains. The dangers of such disposal methods might not be immediately obvious, but improper disposal can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health. The majority of the Pima County-owned landfills and transfer stations continue to accept used antifreeze, batteries, oil, and paint (ABOP) for recycling or proper disposal from residential customers at no charge.

They took payment and instead of heading for the landfill, they took a different turn and your items ended up dumped in the desert.

    Water in the Desert
Mar 19, 2014 - In honor of World Water Day on March 22, Pima County is encouraging everyone to keep trash out of the desert. The trash can release hazardous components into the stormwater and soil, or clog the drains and culverts that protect us from flooding. There are multiple ways to reduce stormwater pollution – from a simple personal commitment to pick up at least one piece of litter a day to joining in community clean-ups organized by your neighbors or local organizations.
