The Pima County Board of Supervisors; Supervisor Ally Miller, District 1; YMCA of Southern Arizona; Pima Community College; and Solon Corporation will celebrate the beginning of a solar project with a groundbreaking on Thursday, May 15, at Northwest YMCA Pima County Community Center, 7770 N. Shannon Road.

The event will be in the lower parking lot at 10 a.m.

Thanks to a partnership between Pima County, YMCA of Southern Arizona, Solon and Pima Community College, the Northwest YMCA Pima County Community Center will construct and operate solar-covered parking at no cost.

Pima County owns and the YMCA leases the land and the facility. The solar array will provide enough shade to cover about 200 parking spots. It will provide 84% of the electricity for the Northwest YMCA. And it will save the YMCA and partners more than $1 million over the next 25 years by fixing the cost of the electricity produced.

Producing electricity with the solar array will save 2 million gallons of water annually and avoid the annual release of:
    • 2 million pounds of greenhouse gases (CO2)
    • 6,755 pounds of nitrogen oxides
    • 7,983 pounds of sulfur dioxide
    • 16.88 grams of toxic metal mercury
