Residents of southeastern Pima County viewed concept plans for Esmond Station Regional Park at a May 29 open house – and liked what they saw.
“It’s like a dream,” said Claudia Anderson, an area resident for 25 years and Vail School District governing board member.

Esmond PDF  A second open house is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Desert Sky Middle School, 9850 E. Rankin Loop. The County is accepting public comment on the plan until June 17.

The Esmond Station Park site, near the intersection of Houghton Road and Mary Ann Cleveland Way, is nearly 120 acres larger than the 155-acre Kino Sports Complex. The concept plan includes a community center, an aquatic center, a library and 19 or more baseball, softball and multisport fields. The old Southern Pacific Railroad rail bed as well as buildings that were part of the railroad’s Esmond Station will be retained and incorporated into the park.

Esmond PDFSports fields and outdoor recreation facilities, an aquatic center and a library scored highest on a community input questionnaire distributed by the County and McGann & Associates Landscape Architects, which is coordinating the planning effort.

“We’ve really seen the area grow and the facilities have not grown with the population,” Anderson said. The school district has made its fields available for use by the growing number of young people in the area, but the fields and facilities in the park plan would better meet the need, she said.

The recommendations and suggestions received from the public will be used to refine the Master Plan for presentation to the Pima County Board of Supervisors and the Parks and Recreation Commission.
