George Mehl Family Foothills Park Improvements were delivered in two phases. Phase one improvements included sports lighting upgrades for the existing fields and was completed in July 2007 to maximize field usage. Phase two provided significant parking improvements, including two new parking areas and new water harvesting in the western lot. Other improvements are a new playground with shade, new dog park, new restroom, new connection to the existing Rillito River Park, Public Art, and miscellaneous improvements to the existing baseball fields to reduce turf and better meet park standards.
This project has greatly reduced the needs for ongoing maintenance at the park, and has prepared the park for the next stage in its development to the master plan created by Natural Resources Parks and Recreation. This effort also incorporated some sustainability elements, including water harvesting and turf reduction that will be tested and reviewed for future park installations. The improvements increase the park’s ability to meet public demand for play fields in northeast Tucson and expand service at this existing park.
