Asbestos abatement on the first floor of the Administration West (formerly Health & Welfare) Building was completed prior to renovating the first and second floor to accommodate the Superior Court Pre-Trial services and Adult Probation Divisions.
To maintain safe access to the building during demolition, abatement and renovation, an access tunnel was constructed from the existing south doors to the elevators and interior exit stairwell. The tunnel was constructed by BC Construction.
The demolition and abatement of the first floor was performed by Environmental Strategies, Inc (ESI), and conducted using all OSHA & NESHAP requirements. The Work included the removal of asbestos containing sprayed-on fireproofing on structural members and Thermal System Insulation (TSI) in the mechanical rooms of the first floor. Additionally, this work included removal of cement asbestos window wall panels, floor tile and adhesive, the cleaning of over-spray on conduit, wiring, duct work, equipment, as well as other hard surfaces within the abatement area. The fixed ceilings, suspended acoustical tile ceilings, lighting, duct work, piping and conduit were also removed.
The first floor now stands ready for the Superior Court tenant improvement project.
