Safety and traffic operation improvements were needed on Curtis Rd between Highway Drive and Plane Avenue.
One goal was to decrease the average travel speed to align with roadway characteristics and the posted speed limit of 35 mph. A second goal was to reduce the number of crashes occurring at the Shannon Road and Davis Avenue intersection.
Road improvements included the following:
• Construction of a mini-roundabout at the intersection of Curtis Road and Shannon Road. The mini-roundabout will reduce speeds on Curtis Road and improve traffic operations. The existing HAWK pedestrian signal will be reconfigured to make a Pelican crossing. The crossing would require relocating the north signal pole approximately 80 feet west, constructing raised median with pedestrian railing and sidewalk, and installation of signal poles at each end of the median.
• Other improvements included the installation of an all-way stop control at the intersection of Curtis Road and Davis Avenue.
• Four speed tables were installed between Highway Drive and Plane Avenue.
Dusk to Dawn lighting will be installed by TEP on Curtis Road.
• The project included pavement rehabilitation from Emerald Drive to to Shannon Road.
PCDOT Maintenance and Operations added pavement rehabilitation on Curtis Road from Shannon Road to Davis Ave for $54,000.
• Artwork for the project included collaborating with Laguna Elementary School students, whose efforts inspired the graphic added to the raised island on the mini-roundabout.
