The Foundation for Senior Living (FSL), established in 1974 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix to provide housing and services to elders, entered into an agreement with the Diocese of Tucson to tear down their administrative building and construct a seven story, 75 unit apartment complex at 111 S. Church Avenue.  They also agreed to renovate the historic Marist at Cathedral Square (one block away) to provide 8 rental units.

Designed by Tucson Bishop Henry Regis Granjon and built in 1915 by Manuel Flores, the Marist College exhibits Italian Renaissance and Spanish Colonia Revival style.  It is the only existing three-story mud adobe structure in the State of Arizona and in 2011 was added to the National Historic Register.  Prior to completing this renovation, it was identified as one of the 25 “most endangered historic places” in Arizona.

In the mid-rise, there are 65 one-bedroom/one-bath units (650SF) and 10 two bedroom/one-bath units (820SF).  At the Marist, there are 4 one-bedroom/one-bath (700 SF) units on each of two floors.  The mid-rise building features laundry rooms on each floor and a gym and community room on the 7th floor.  The Marist units include laundry machines.  All units in both locations include full kitchens with a range, refrigerator, dishwasher, disposal, central A/C, ceiling fans, windows and window coverings.

For transportation, all tenants will have access to a van.  Activities will include financial literacy classes, computer training, health promotion and disease prevention classes, and free membership to the Armory Senior Center.  Units will be leased at reduced rents to households under 60% Area Median Income. All units will remain affordable for 30 years.  Design features and Energy Star appliances will reduce utility costs for tenants.  FSL will also manage the properties.
