  • Design Standards, Specifications & Details

The Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (PCRWRD) adopted the 2022 Engineering Design Standards and the 2022 Standard Specifications and Details for Construction. Subsequently, in the interest of promoting countywide acceptance and use of these standards and details, the Pima County Board of Supervisors accepted their sponsorship and the responsibility of keeping them current and viable.

Publication of the Engineering Design Standards and Standard Specifications and Details for Construction for Pima County fulfills the goal of the PCRWRD Standards Committee, whose members are appointed by the Department Director.  The group is composed of the RWRD Sanitary Engineering Manager, representatives from the RWRD Field Engineering Section and Conveyance Division, and stakeholders of the private development construction and engineering profession. All committee members joined forces to produce such a set of documents.

It is the policy of the Department that all Public Sewers be constructed in accordance with accepted construction standards. The Design Standards for Public Sewers in Pima County have three primary goals: to attain a 100-year Service Life for sanitary sewer conveyance facilities prior to rehabilitation or replacement; to access and maintain sanitary sewer conveyance facilities in a cost- effective manner; and to keep infiltration, roots, grease and other obstructions out of sanitary sewer conveyance facilities.

The Engineering Design Standards provide the minimum criteria for the design of Public Sewage Conveyance facilities in Pima County. It is not intended that these standards be blindly applied in every application. There may be strong technical reasons a particular standard is not appropriate for a given situation. In unique circumstances, creative engineering design, based on sound engineering principles, may meet the intent of the Standards. The purpose of the Standard Specifications and Details is to establish the minimum acceptable standards by which new Public Sewers, or modifications to existing Public Sewers, are to be constructed in Pima County.

Effective February 15, 2022, the Pima County Board of Supervisors approved the 2022 Standards and may be implemented in new public sewers.  All new public sewer projects submitted to Pima County for review and approval must comply with the new standards by March 16, 2022.  All projects under review must comply with the new 2022 Standards by April 16, 2022, if not approved by this date.
