  • Transportation Planning

Pima County develops transportation plans and programs to assist in planning and funding for needed infrastructure. The county works closely with the Pima Association of Governments and other local jurisdictions to develop the long-range Regional Mobility and Accessibility Plan (RMAP) and the short-range Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Both the TIP and the RMAP include projects funded by a variety of sources including the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), federal funds, and local funds including the Roadway Development Impact Fee Program.

    Public Involvement

Pima County seeks public involvement in the development of projects. Citizens, neighborhoods and businesses provide valuable input during the design and construction phases of projects. Typically a citizens advisory committee is established for major projects. The Community Participation and Mitigation Ordinance identifies the policies and processes for citizen involvement.

    Sonoran Corridor

The Sonoran Corridor is a planned highway connection between Interstate 19 and 10 in an area south of the Tucson International Airport.  This corridor is being planned to accommodate roadway and railway facilities that will facilitate the movement of people and goods.  The Arizona State Department of Transportation is currently completing a Tier 1 Environmental Impact Study of the corridor which will identify a preferred alignment.

    Interstate 11 (Intermountain West Corridor)

Interstate 11 is a new planned multi-modal corridor between Mexico and Canada. The segment between Phoenix and Mexico, including Tucson, is being studied by the Arizona State Department of Transportation. Pima County has studied one alternative route that connects to Interstate 19 near El Toro Road in the Town of Sahuarita and travels west and north through Avra Valley. This 56-mile route crosses the Pinal County line west of the Pinal Air Park.
